No giro do Maracá / In the spin of the Maracá

In the work, “No giro do Maracá” I wanted to represent the only thing that unites the Indigenous people in this moment, which is prayer, collective or personal rituals. For this reason, I use the image of the Maracá and, of course, various designs that are common to the various Indigenous peoples, symbolizing and carrying the courage of the cougar, the patience of the turtle, the fluidity of the fish and the strength of the samaúma tree, representing the medicine of the forest. For the Indigenous peoples, the Maracá is not only a musical instrument, but a true tool for curing. It has the power to call the enchanted beings to help us in sacred moments and to ward off bad spirits and energies, as a true cleansing. So, for me, a very powerful cosmic universe flows within a Maracá and in my work I wanted to represent this universe outside of the Maracá in the moment of the ritual. It would be as if the entire world could see. It would carry this reflection that we are isolated at this moment in our villages, but we are connected with our relatives through our rituals and our enchanted beings.

Benício Pitaguary

Eu sou Benício Pitaguary, liderança jovem do Povo Pitaguary, sou da aldeia Monguba, no município de Pacatuba no Estado do Ceará. Eu sou artista plástico, especialista em grafismos e pinturas corporais indígenas; articulador do Museu Indígena Pitaguary; licenciado em Geografia pela UFC e comunicador do Mídia Índia . Meus pais são indígenas, mas nasci e cresci na periferia de Fortaleza e desde muito novo tinha habilidade com desenhos, de início gostava muito das artes de graffiti que via nas paredes da periferia, mas, a partir dos meus 18 anos tive meu primeiro contato com grafismo indígenas no meu povo e me apaixonei por essa expressão de arte. Desde então tive a oportunidade de ter contato com várias povos com que fui aprendendo direta e indiretamente conhecimentos e técnicas de pinturas corporais, e hoje minha vida gira em torno dos grafismos indígenas.
